Every year, three teams of 90 undergraduates bicycle across the country to raise money for people with disabilities. They call this the “Journey of Hope”. This weekend, the Journey of Hope comes to Lake Havasu. The men of Pi Kappa Phi that comprise the Journey of Hope’s South Team will arrive at Lake Havasu High School around 11am on Saturday morning. Everyone is invited to come out to support them.
What is the Journey of Hope?
The Journey of Hope is part of the fundraising efforts Push America uses to raise money for people with disabilities from all walks of life. The journey is tackled by three separate bicycling teams of 30 members each. Each “leg” begins in a different city along the Pacific Coast: the North Team begins in San Francisco, the South Team begins in Los Angeles and the Transamerica Team begins in Seattle. After they travel more than 12,000 miles total through 32 states, they all meet up in Washington DC. Each year, the men of Pi Kappa Phi raise over $500,000 through their cycling efforts. All money raised goes directly to funding grants for local charities aimed specifically at helping Americans with disabilities. When the Journey of Hope comes to Lake Havasu, they will be giving a grant to a Lake Havasu charity as well.
On Saturday evening, the cyclists will be dining at the Lake Havasu Lions Club. Before they continue on their journey Sunday, they will have breakfast at the Knights of Columbus around 9am. If you’d like to meet up with these amazing men when the Journey of Hope comes to Lake Havasu, please contact Matt Varnell at (704) 574-5804. Show these guys how much you admire their charitable efforts as they continue on in the journey across the country.
